A buried drain can intercept that water and carry it to an appropriate outlet.

French drains are commonly used beside foundations, along retaining walls, near downspout discharge areas, at the edge of driveways, and in narrow side yards. They are useful where a surface swale would be too noticeable, too steep, or simply impractical. On smaller residential lots, this ability to work below grade is often the deciding factor.

The system does require careful installation. The trench needs the right depth and slope. The pipe must be sized for expected runoff and set in clean stone so water can reach it. Filter fabric helps keep surrounding soil from clogging the stone over time. Most importantly, the drain must have a place to discharge. A French drain without a workable outlet can fill with water and fail to relieve the problem.

A French drain is not always the best solution for heavy surface runoff.
